Vision

Broaden Global Insight

Studies suggest that it is essential to promote diverse perspectives and adaptability among local/international students (Grosch et al., 2023). In fact, interactions with people/artifacts of cultures other than one’s own can effectively foster one's ability to adapt to diverse cultural settings (Sternberg et al., 2021). By facilitating open discussions on cultural topics, students can develop a comprehensive understanding of various cultures and critically analyze their values and beliefs, thus broadening their global insights.

Students with global perspectives can also contribute unique insights within organizations (Basadur et al., 2013). Since employers and universities identify creativity as a highly desirable attribute, creative thinkers are competitive candidates for jobs (Oliver & Jorre, 2018).  Additionally, innovative students can identify the gaps in the market and develop groundbreaking products with remarkable benefits (Johnston & Bate, 2013). Hence, broadening students’ global insight not only improves personal well-being but also adds value to their future careers.

Develop Cultural Competence

Cultural competence consists of cognitive and behavioral skills that lead to effective communication across diverse cultures (Chiu et al., 2013). Participation in cultural festivals significantly increases appreciation for diversity, cultural knowledge, and intercultural communication skills (Nieto & Booth, 2009). This highlights the essential role of intercultural events in promoting cultural competence among students. Our event provides an opportunity for students to challenge their cultural assumptions, be exposed to diverse perspectives and values, and cultivate skills to facilitate meaningful intercultural relationships.

Cultural competence is essential in the modern globalized world where collaboration spans borders. Research showed that students with cultural competence are more attractive to employers by contributing effectively to international teams, communicating with clients from different countries, and adapting to the demands of a globalized job market (Griffith et al., 2016; Johnson et al., 2016). Multinational corporations are craving employees who can navigate diverse cultural contexts. Students with this proficiency build strong relationships with people from diverse backgrounds, fostering trust, and cooperation. Most importantly, students can maintain their competitiveness in the workplace.

Hence, the project provides a fertile ground for transformative learning by exposing students to new cultures and engaging in open discussions, through which they engage in critical thinking, questioning their cultural frameworks, and exploring alternative viewpoints. This allows them to develop a deeper understanding of cultural complexity, challenge their preconceived notions, and grow personally and interculturally (Mezirow, 1997).
